Pictures at an exhibition

We've mentioned a few times now the exhibition that the Together churches have organised to help people engage with the issues around climate crisis. In fact, I was in a school earlier today and overhead some of the staff talking about the exhibition and how good it was for people to have their work exhibited in the city centre - as it happens, they were mounting work from the school's own children on the same theme at the time. It seems word has spread, which is marvellous!

Well, they say a picture is worth 1000 words - so here are some snapshots taken during the mounting of the exhibition.

The exhibition is open all this week from 10am-5pm in St Cuthbert's Church, Lothian Road

A Forest of Hope for Paris 2015

In Paris in December 2015, world leaders will gather to seek a global agreement on how to reduce carbon emissions and reduce the risk of climate change to safe levels.

During September, members and visitors to St John's Church, Princes Street, Edinburgh, are writing prayers and messages of encouragement and hope on paper leaves, to bring a forest of hope into leaf inside our beautiful and historic church.

By 21 September we had over 100 leaves, and you are still welcome to go in and write one to add to the artwork.

This is one of many actions around the world raising awareness and putting pressure on governments to reach a strong climate deal. We would encourage you to find out about other events over the next three months and participate.

In particular, we would encourage you to participate in Scotland's Climate March, which begins at 12 noon on 28 November in the Meadows, and is organised by Stop Climate Chaos Scotland.

Event: Wildlife Gardening

Whether in your own garden, on your windowsill or in the community, you can become a force for biodiversity by becoming a wildlife gardener.

History teacher George Harris's wildlife garden in Tollcross has been developing since he bought the house twenty years ago. His small urban oasis has played host to an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna and has afforded pleasure and education to generations of family and friends. In this inspirational and practical talk George shares his excitement about nature and describes how he did it with the help of a wealth of photographs.

Alan Elliot is a PhD student at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh, working on the dynamics of speciation in the Himalayas. He is a passionate community gardener, participating in commemoration of the Forfar botanists and the Lost Garden of Penicuik, and St John's Church new biodiversity group. He will speak about community gardening and how in a city those without gardens can become wildlife gardeners too.

Monday 7 April, 7.30-9pm, St John's Church, Princes Street, Edinburgh. All welcome!

What's it all about?

The core of the Earth be Glad Lent Programme is Eleanor Harris' keynote talk. Based on the old Hebrew tale of Jonah and the Whale, it explores the reasons for, and finding a way to break through, environmental inaction, demolishing the distinctions between "religious" and "secular".

Charlotte Bray (@Charlotte_Bray), professional charity worker and "secret eco-warrior", describes it like this:

It’s not easy to be the bearer of bad news. Equally, it’s not easy to deliver a message that is relevant to both faith and non-faith audiences. In her keynote speech, Eleanor manages to achieve both these feats, expertly weaving relevant themes and current discussions into the well-worn story of Jonah. We are a people who stand on the edge of destruction and whether or not we believe in a higher being is immaterial. We must put aside our differences and act now if we are to avoid the terrible consequences of many years of environmental abuse. The answer is not just to reduce our footprint and ‘balance out’ the negative activities. It is to create an environmental ‘handprint’; to live lives that nurture rather than destroying, that encourage growth rather than stifling it. Following Eleanor’s first delivery of this talk at the Earth Be Glad launch, I was really inspired to experience the discussion that continued well into the evening. Scientists, environmentalists, educators, St. John’s members and charity workers were seemingly united in their shared concern to ‘turn into the hope’ for a world facing destruction. Whoever you are and whatever your thoughts on the current, apparently unavoidable environmental disaster, I would urge you to attend this thought-provoking (and hopefully action inspiring) talk.

Mike Elm (@elmers87), Project Officer for the Scottish Forum on Natural Capital, was at the launch and wrote this review:

Do you really think you'll get to heaven if you've been complicit in turning  earth into hell? I might not have the wording exactly right but this idea underpins Eleanor's excellent keynote speech.

Our current lifestyles are causing extinctions and the loss of nature on an unprecedented scale. There is no getting away from the need for drastic changes in the way we live our lives. The fear and inaction caused by the understanding is a luxury we can not afford, and Eleanor's talk is an inspirational call for pragmatism in the face of inaction.

And just because it's in a church don't let that make you sceptical, I'm a firm non-religious type but this issue cuts across all degrees and types of faith!

Keynote talks are in St John's Church, Princes Street, at the following dates and times:

Monday 17 March 6.00pm
Wednesday 26 March 7.30pm
Thursday April 3rd 2.00pm
Sunday 13th April 4.00pm
